Sung Hwan books semis ticket
South Korea’s Park Sung Hwan became the first player to march into the men’s singles semi-finals in the US$500,000 Yonex-Sunrise BWF World Super Series Masters Finals.
The lanky Korean battled for an hour before beating last year's runner-up and second seed Peter Gade Christensen 21-12, 7-21, 21-15 for his second win in Group B which assured him of a place in the last four. Sung Hwan beat Thailand's Boonsak Polsana 28-26, 21-18 on Wednesday.
Christensen, who beat compatriot Jan Jorgensen in his first match, will have to beat Boonsak tomorrow for a top two finish in the group and a place in the semi-finals. Boonsak also hauled himself back on track when he outplayed Jorgensen 21-9, 21-18 in 33 minutes.
“Things did not go right for me today. It’s okay. I lost to a better player. Park took full advantage of the strong draft in the stadium," said Christensen.
“I happened to be on the wrong side of the draft twice but I tried my best. All credit to Park for making good choices. This is the
best Park has played against me. “Tomorrow I just have to win which should be enough for me to make the semis.”
Women’s top seed Saina Nehwal of India, who fell to Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo in her first match, gave a polished display to beat Canada’s Charmaine Reid 21-14, 21-9 and stay in the hunt in Group A.
In Group B, Boonsak’s sister Salakjit, the second seed is also back in the running after a shock defeat to Netherland’s Yao Jie in the first round. Salakjit outplayed Germany’s Nicole Grether 21-17, 21-7. Yao Jie in turn was beaten today, going down in straight sets 13-21, 10-21 to Germany’s Juliane Schenk which threw the group wide open.
In the men’s doubles, South Koreans Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae assured themselves a place in the last four with a 21-19, 21-19 win over Indonesia’s Alvent Chandra-Hendra Gunawan – their second win in Group B.
However, it will be a wait and see situation for Malaysians Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari. The pair who had upset compatriots Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, the defending champions and top seeds, in their first match in Group A, could not sustain their momentum and were beaten 18-21, 17-21 by Xu Chen-Guo Zhendong of China in their second match today.
“We made the mistake of following the rhythm of our opponents. And the Chinese pair took advantage of us when we started to make mistakes,” said Zakry
Taufik was Chong Wei's Empowerment Deal
The day before, Taufik also lost straight sets 18-21, 24-26 from the players China, Bao Chunlai. Thus, the former world champion in 2005 was to temporarily inhabit the basic standings Group A. Taufik chance to escape from this position (the caretaker) if the last game that no longer determine the pace players defeated Taiwan, Hsieh Yu Hsin.
Thus, three representatives of Indonesia, which appeared in the Super Series Masters Finals was certainly fail because it had swallowed two defeats. Taufik addition, there were two doubles, ie non-Pelatnas players, Alvent Yulianto Chandra / Hendra Gunawan Aprida, and players Pelatnas, Suryatama Dasuki Yonathan / Rian Sukmawan.
Only the mixed doubles Hendra AG / Vita Marissa of chance in the match despite losing the second because they won a victory yesterday. This Pelatnas ex-spouse must win over Thailand in the player the ultimate fight Group B, Friday (4 / 12), to obtain tickets of the last four.
In the battle lasted 28 minutes was clearly seen that Taufik is very difficult balance rapid game Chong Wei. In the first set, Chong Wei easily reached that point the world number one player is moving very fast. Taufik had only to equate the score 2-2. After that, Chong Wei to win 21-6 skyrocketed.
In the second set, Taufik tried to get up. However, resistance Olympic gold medalist in Athens was only able to keep up to Chong Wei 10-10 score because after that Taufik back far behind until finally giving up 13-21.
This result makes Chong Wei and Bao Chunlai as representatives of Group A advanced to the semifinals. Both players won the ticket after winning two victories because, on the other match, Bao Chunlai rubber sets 17-21 win, 21-8, and 21-16 for Hsieh Yu Hsin.

MD : Michal Logosz/Robert Mateusiak bt Baptiste Careme/Sylvain Grosjean 21-13, 21-13.
Another swept clean created by Poland for #7th place. Pi who usually gave point to France couldn’t help much as she plays only if France could steal 1 point from previous matches. Wacha has his lucky set in the 2nd. Matthieu actually controls the game from the beginning when he leads 11-4 at interval. Chan Yan Kit who supposed to cope 1 point failed to fulfill the mission since he lost momentum at the edge of 1 set. Thrilling behind 18-20, Chan equals the score 20-all with his beautifully net winner. But two errors that he make finally gave this game to Sasaki. Either in women’s doubles, Wang and Zhou who defeated Europe #1, Kamilla/Lena obviously out from expectation. Against semifinalist Olympic 2008, they can’t compared the match with lack of defense. WD : Wong Pei Tty/Chin Eei Hui lost to Kamilla Rytter Juhl 11-21, 21-16, 11-21.
The Danish should feel disappointing with their bad luck. After Tine get injury and couldn’t play for her team, Peter Gade also get headache when they have to face ‘life and death’ match against Malaysia for semifinal spot. But it doesn’t mean Malaysia could pace them so easy. Kamilla Rytter Juhl succeeded to be hero for her team after two wonderful matches in mixed and women’s doubles. She took 2 points for her country and break her record to beat Wong/Chin in 3 set. Juhl’s spirit unfortunately couldn’t feel by Lars/Jonas who lost so easy from Malaysian.

XD : Zheng Bo/Ma Jin bt Devin/Lita 22-20, 18-21, 21-14.
Indonesia would be surprised with this results since they just let 2nd tie players. They realized that China is the strongest team so they just let their younger players to take more experiences. Maria, Simon, and Devin/Lita actually have their big chance to beat the Chinese if they could play constantly either in 2nd or 3rd set. This whole matches took approximately 4,5 hours and break the record as the longest matches in this year Sudirman Cup event.
First match represented by new collaboration, Hendra and Ahsan. As his first team event, Ahsan played so well with his skills. Little bit awkward in the first with so many unforced error, Many return from his balls are out and doubtful. In the other court, Cai Yun play aggressively with his smashing and placing. Ahsan totally changes in 2nd set. With his spirit, Ahsan and Hendra compared Fu/Cai’s skills into tight match from the beginning of this set until 19-all. Beautifully placement to the baseline by Ahsan and reflex return too long by Fu Haifeng close this game for Indonesian pair. In final match, Ahsan failed to keep his spirit and rhythm when the Chinese control the match with their placing and bumping smash.
All England’s winner, Wang Yihan also need 3 set to beat bronze medalist Olympic 2008, Maria Kristin. Maria took 1st set as Yihan follow her game and couldn’t leveled Maria’s placing and smashing. After took many advices from Zhang Ning and Li Yong Bo, Yihan finally shows her true self skills and develop her game. Leading 8-0, 14-2 and 18-4, she forces rubber set 21-5. Although Maria succeed to minimize her errors in 3rd set, it only saved before interval 10-11. After that, Maria lost her spirit to balance Yihan smashing and drop shot to take 10 consecutive points and end this match.
Olympic gold medalist, Lin Dan also not at his best performance when he facing against Simon Santoso. Many smashes from Lin Dan could be returned by Simon. He also makes so many unforced error in front of the net. Meanwhile, Simon play aggressively in 1st set with his smash and lob to push Lin Dan play with his style. Unfortunately, Simon couldn’t keep his momentum in 2nd set. Lin Dan reverses the game and took it so easy for the next two set.
Another interesting match represented by Devin/Lita as the last chance for Indonesia to gather 1 last point. They’re surprising Zheng/Ma in 1st set to lead the game 20-18. But critical point syndrome canceled their winning and lost 20-22. DevTa revenge their lost in 2nd set but in the end after interval break, they’re failed to keep the rhythm and lost 14-21.
With this result, Indonesia will face against the winner of sub group 1A (Korea, red) in semifinal and China will challenge Malaysia for final ticket.
Results Day 4 Sudirman Cup 2009 The Toughest Day for Japan, Easy Way for Thailand
Japan team who get promote to group one last year having bad luck after lost to England 4-1 in narrowly matches. They will face against Hongkong which defeated by Korea to decide which country will stay in group 1 for the next Sudirman Cup event. SESSION 1
Group 2B : Poland vs Rusia, 3-2

MD : Michal Logosz/Robert Mateusiak bt Vitaly Durkin/Alexandr Nikolaenko 21-16, 23-21.
WS : Agnieszka Wojtkowska lost to Ella Diehl 10-21, 12-21.
WD : Malgorzata Kurdelska/Natalia Pocztowiak lost to Nina Vislova/Valeria Sorokina 17-21, 18-21.
With their experiencing players, Poland is favorable to win this match. But for Russia, after beaten Singapore and took 2 points from Poland means this sport has growth very fast. Nina Vislova not only playing clever in doubles but also attractive in mixed. They need to explore men players in singles and doubles. Alexandr/Vitaly have skills but lack of experience. Lead 20-18 in second game and have clinched to make it rubber but then their wasting their two chances to close the game. Then they have second match point 21-20 but lost again 21-21 before Polish took this set 23-21.

XD : Hendri Kurniawan Saputra/Vanessa Neo Yu Yan bt Joritt De Ruiter/Ilse Vaessen 21-12, 21-14.
Singapore finally shown their true performance to beat Netherlands. Zhang Beiwen who is not playing good as usual failed to steal 1 point from Judith. But her comrade, Derek Wong succeed to make an upset Eric Pang in 3 game. Shinta Mulia Sari might the weakest link of WD when she can’t return smashes from Yao Jie and Judith in the first set. But luckily Yao Lei’s placement could endure their smashing attack.

WD : Duanganong Aroonkesorn/Kunchala Voravichitchaikul lost to Cheng Wen Hsing/Chien Yu Chin 13-21, 16-21.
After lost 16-21 in the first set, the Taiwanese XD pair actually control the game in 2nd set. With their smash and aggressiveness, Fang/Cheng lead the score 15-11 and 17-14. But lack of consistency in the critical points gave free consecutive points for Thai’s pair. Sudket/Saralee reach match point 20-18 but Taiwanese catch up the score before Thailand closed their chance 22-20. Boonsak get another messy day after he has to put so much effort in his two last matches. Cheng/Lin have their slighter edge when their fight against Sudket/Songphon in set 1 and 3. Sudket seems exhausting in the game after XD match but Songphon existed to cover his game in critical moments.
Group 2A : Germany vs France 5-0
XD : Johannes Schoettler/Birgit Overzier bt SylvainGrosjean/Weny Rahmawati 19-21, 21-17, 21-16.
MS : Marc Zwiebler bt Matthieu Lo Yi Ping 17-21, 21-17, 21-13.

WS : Xu Huaiwen bt Pi Hongyan 21-19, 21-13.
WD : Birgit Overzier/Sandra Marinello bt Weny Rahmawati/Laura Choinet 21-17, 21-12.
Tight matches in begin but easy enough in the end. Germany’s new collaboration, Johannes/Birgit shocked in the 1st set but get their rhythm back for the next two set. Marc Zwiebler also need 3 sets to beat Matthieu’s spirit. The battle between two ex-Chinese players might not interesting as usual because Pi not playing as well. Although she leveled Xu in the 1st game but lost her sparks in 2nd.

XD : Yoo Yeon Seong/Kim Min Jung bt Hui Wai Ho/Yip Pui Yin 10-21, 21-11, 21-16.

WS : Kim Moon Hi lost to Wang Chen 21-13, 15-21, 15-21.
WD : Ha Jung Eun/Kim Min Jung bt Chau Hoi Wah/Chan Tsz Ka 21-7, 21-14.
Hongkong almost beat Korea if they took one points from doubles match. At the first match, Yoo/Kim should play rubber set before winning over new collaboration Hui/Yip. This match also interesting with jumping smash from Yip who usually play for women’s singles. Another exciting match is women’s singles. With her experiences, Wang could make this tall-girl run over the court in 2nd and 3rd game.
Group 1B : England vs Japan 4-1
XD : Anthony Clark/Donna Kellogg bt Noriyasu Hirata/Miyuki Maeda 24-22, 21-15.

WS : Sarah Walker lost to Sayaka Sato 15-21, 14-21.
WD : Jenny Wallwork/Donna Kellogg bt Miyuki Maeda/Satoko Suetsuna 21-12, 21-12
“Life and Death” match between England and Japan finally decided which country would play for play-off in subgroup 1A. Some of Japan’s players clapping pompom sticks to support their team. So badly that it wasn’t run very well. Many critical points possible to win the matches created by Japanase but unfortunately that they’d lost in the end. In mixed doubles, after thrilling behind 11-16, duo Japanese leveled the match 16-16 before took match point 20-17. But another critical points syndrome prevents them to win this set. Donna and Clark played aggressive and saved 3 times match point in row when Hirata and Satoko making so many unforced error to return the shuttle out. Clark looks relaxed and Kellogg’s stroke is more accurate in this game as placing from Clark to fist up high and finished the match 24-22.
Another disappointing result from Japanese represented by Kenichi when he has so many unforced error in 3nd game. Having ‘bad call’ when the score is 6-6, Kenichi starts to make many errors. Meanwhile, Andrew is so aggressive with his bang-smashes, 15-13. Another 3 consecutive smash make the score 18-13 before finish the match 21-14.
In MD match, Japan also frustrated with their two young pair, Kenta/Kenichi who get bad result in the end. Although can compare Nathan/Anthony in the 1st game, they failed to keep that constantly in 2nd set. Leading 18-12, another critical point syndrome just let them did many unforced error. 8 consecutive points include Clark’s smash fist up in the air reverse the score to England’s match point 20-18 and close this game 21-19. Rubber set also controlled by Japanese in the beginning of match. But when they reach 16-14, England comeback again with their momentum and gather 5 consecutive points, 19-14 before winning it 21-18.
Clark express happiness to throw his racket into the crowds because with this results, England will stay in group 1A for the next Sudirman Cup. In the other hand, Japan will play against Hongkong for play-off to decide which country will stay in group 1.

Boonsak has opportunity to take this game when he equals the point 16-all after down 12-16. But Marc never let it be easy. Play more aggressively he reaches match point 20-17 and close this set 21-19. Unfortunately Germany couldn’t ask more for doubles. With their experience, Sudket, Saralee and Kunchala sealed another 3 points of victory.

Greysia/Nitya looks little bit slower on the beginning of set but too strong in the end of match. WD : Wong Pei Tty/Chin Eei Hui bt Wang Chen/Chan Tsz Ka 20-22, 21-10, 21-15
Hongkong unfortunately waste their chance to beat Malaysia. Wang Chen put some miracle on the first set but failed for the next two set without Zhou Mi. Based on yesterday match, Zhou Mi actually played better in doubles rather than Wang Chen. Another ex-Chinese player, Hu Yun would be an investment for Hongkong although not very success on his first match. Yip Pui Yin took advantage from Wong Pei Xian after she fell down and got left ankle injury on the second match. With so many ex-Chinese players, Hongkong should be more solid if they could dissolve Men’s Doubles problem as their weakest link.

Indonesia eyes Sudirman Cup
Ahead of the Sudirman Cup tournament scheduled for May 10-17 in Guangzhou, China, PBSI Chairman Djoko Santoso realized that the Indonesian team face hard task to win the tournament.
"It's time for us to focus and concentrate on winning," the Jakarta Post on Wednesday quoted Djoko Santoso as saying.
PBSI officially announced Tuesday its squad for the biennial tournament which is joined by 35 players and officials comprised of 12 men and 8 women players, seven coaches, two paramedics and six officials.
Indonesian badminton team's achievement is considered of discouraging lately. Only a handful of players have attained success in the preceding Super Series.
Indonesia's world No. 1 mixed doubles pair Nova Widayanto and Liliyana Natsir were the only players to triumph at the Malaysia Open at the beginning of the year. None of Indonesia's singles player reached the finals in All England Open in Birmingham, England.

Sudirman Cup opens as hosts China meet unexpected hurdle
2009-05-10 07:15:37 |
GUANGZHOU, May 9. (Xinhua) -- The 11th Sudirman Cup World Team Badminton Championships opened here on Saturday with 34 teams competing in four divisions in the biennial tournament. Defending champions and hosts China will strive for a consecutive third crown on home soil but the order of play change may distract the team en route to the trophy. In this edition, the order of play is fixed as men's doubles, women's singles, men's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. But the order may be adjusted if there is any player participating in two matches, and the player is entitled to a minimum interval of 30 minutes between the two matches. "The men's doubles is not China's stronghold. In the men's singles we have a lot of tough opponents as well as in women's singles," said Chinese badminton team head coach Li Yongbo. "In the past we could have a comfortable advantage over the other team, but now we may have to trail from behind." According to the rules, only teams in Division One can compete for the champion. China is grouped with Indonesia, England and Japan in Division 1A. While South Korea, Malaysia, Denmark and Hong Kong, China in Division 1B. Top two placers in each group will play a cross-over semifinal for a final berth. China may waltz into the semis as it has only one real rival in the group stage Indonesia. Only three teams China (six times), Indonesia (one time in the inaugural edition in 1989) and South Korea (three times) won the event, and five teams (China, Indonesia, South Korea, Denmark and England) made the semis. Kang Young Joong, president of Badminton World Federation (BWF), thanked the organizing committee for their hard work despite the rise of H1N1 flu in some countries and regions and made proper and effective measures to ensure the opening of the event. The tourney is slated from May 10 to 17. |

BAM To Monitor Swine Flu Daily Before Sudirman Cup Trip
KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will monitor the outbreak of swine influenza with the help of local health authorities before deciding whether to send national shuttlers to the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou, China from May 10-17.
BAM General Manager Kenny Goh said it was a proactive step to monitor the situation by seeking advice from health-related local authorities.
"The well-being and health of all the players are our utmost concern. We do not compromise on any health threats to our players while competing outside this country," he told Bernama when contacted here today.
Asked if the withdrawing would unavoidable if the prevailing outbreak worsened, Kenny said the final decision will depend on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as organizers of the Sudirman Cup.
For the Sudirman Cup which is the world mixed team championship, the Malaysian team will comprise of Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Wong Mew Choo, Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong and Wong Pei Tty/Chin Eei Hui.
Apart from the main list, the reserves list is made up of Tan Chun Seang, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, Kuan Beng Hong (men's singles), Julia Wong (women's singles), Zakry Latif/Fairuzizuan Tazari (men's doubles) and Vivian Hoo (women's singles).
The Malaysian squad are drawn together with defending champion China, South Korea, Denmark, England, Indonesia, Japan and Hong Kong in Division One, in the tournament that will see 34 teams competing for the title.

Danish surprise for Sudirman Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: There was a surprise in the seedings yesterday when Denmark were handed the top billing for the Sudirman Cup, which will be held in Guangzhou from May 10-17.
Three countries — Indonesia, China and Malaysia — are ranked behind the Danes in Division One.
Despite the third seeding, defending champions China, spearheaded by Lin Dan, are expected to emerge tops again.
If Malaysia, led by Lee Chong Wei, can live up to their fourth seeding, it will be the first time they will make a semi-final appearance in the biennial event. Malaysia’s best result was a sixth placing.
The others in the Malaysian squad are Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boong Heong, Wong Mew Choo, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty and Ng Hui Lin.
The draw for the event will be held tomorrow.

Kien Keat and Boon Heong must deliver in Sudirman Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s hopes of making the semi-finals for the first time in the Sudirman Cup will hinge on the performance of the men’s doubles players.
And Koo Kien Keat is determined to live up to expectations with his partner Tan Boon Heong in the world mixed team event, which will be held in Guangzhou from May 10-17.
Based on the draw released by the World Badminton Federation (BWF) yesterday, fourth seeded Malaysia are in Group A of Division One with top seeds Denmark, South Korea and Hong Kong.
In Group B are Indonesia, defending champions China, England and Japan.
The top two teams will play in the crossover semi-finals.
Malaysia’s team will comprise Lee Chong Wei, Kien Keat-Boon Heong, Wong Mew Choo, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty and Ng Hui Lin. Three others will be named later.
Denmark and South Korea, who boasts of strong doubles combinations, could dash Malaysia’s hopes of making the top four.
Denmark could field either Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen or Mathias Boe-Cartsen Morgensen while South Korea can depend on Lee Yong-dae-Shin Baek-cheol or Hwang Ji-man-Han Sang-hook.
Kien Keat, who is playing in his first tournament after winning the Swiss Open in March, hoped that the men’s doubles pair would be able to win points in every tie.
“We have a tougher draw. It will be a three-pronged challenge in the Group A. Denmark and South Korea have stronger women players,” said Kien Keat.
“The men’s doubles players will have to deliver a sure point to keep the team’s hopes alive,” said Kien Keat.
On paper, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei should win his matches against Peter-Gade Christensen and Park Sung-hwan of Denmark and South Korea respectively.
Chong Wei, however, has to be wary of Christensen, who has a knack of beating the Malaysian when least expected.
It will be difficult for Malaysia to win the women’s doubles as both Denmark and South Korea have reliable pairs in their ranks. It will be just as tough in the mixed doubles too.
“If we lose, it will put a great pressure on the team. We have to try and win a point,” added Kien Keat.
“South Korea have been fielding many new men’s pairs of late while Denmark will be banking on their regulars.”
On paper, Malaysia’s women’s players are not expected to get the better of their group opponents, although Mew Choo and Eei Hui-Pei Tty have done well in the past.

Taufik Hidayat claims Indian Open badminton title
Second-seeded Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia defeated Muhammad Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia 21-18, 21-19 on Sunday to clinch the India Open men's singles title, while top-seeded Pi Hongyan of France took the women's event.
Taufik, winner of all previous six meetings with Hashim, exuded confidence in his strokes and succeeded in inducing errors from his Malaysian opponent.
"The score was close; winning a title is always very satisfying," Taufik said.
"This win will give me a lot of confidence for the world championships at this venue in August. There's a bit of drift inside the stadium here, so it takes time to get used to the shuttle in the high tosses. I think, I read the drift much better than him."
Pi, ranked fourth in the world, rallied to beat fifth-seeded Julia Wang Pei Xian of Malaysia 17-21, 21-15, 21-14 in the women's final.
Pi, whose last title came at the 2006 Singapore Open, is six years older than Wang and used her experience to slow the rallies with high tosses to the back court after having lost the opening game.
"Wang's a very tough opponent. She beat me two years ago, but here I felt I was in control," Pi said.
"It was tough to come back after losing the first game. I then decided to slow down the game, thinking it would suit me better."
In the men's doubles final, the experienced Malaysian duo of Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah defeated the new Singapore combination of Hendri Kurniawan Saputra and Hendra Wijaya 21-9, 21-11.
Ma Jin and Wang Xiao Li of China downed Vita Marissa and Nadya Melati of Indonesia 21-14, 21-13 for the women's doubles title.
Marissa also teamed up with Flandy Limpele to beat V. Diju and Jwala Gutta of India in the mixed doubles final.

Players upset with service judge in All England badminton
Chinese mixed pair Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen have accused the English service judge Chris Taylor of unfairly giving them "about eight service faults" on Wednesday, which they claimed eventually led to their 16-21, 21-18, 21-17 loss to Indonesia's Flandy Limpele and Russia's Anastasia Russkikh in the first round.
But Russkikh denied that the referee favored them and said that it was not something "special".
"The referee also ruled against us... a couple of times. So I don't think he's helping us," she said.
A source close to the Chinese team said that Taylor inflicted five faults on the Chinese pair versus one on Limpele and Russkikh during their three-game encounter.
In badminton, a service fault means a point automatically being awarded to opponents.
Russkikh, however, also blamed another service judge in their match against English Robert Blair and Scottish Imogen Bankier on Thursday although they won 26-24, 21-19.
"He faulted our serves four to five times," she said, "that didn't bother me. He had a problem with me before. But it's his problem, not mine. I served well."
It was also claimed that some other Chinese players were treated in a similar way in two other matches in the week-long tournament which will end on Sunday and the Chinese team are filing a complaint.
"We were faulted all in crucial times," Zhang Yawen said of the damage of the judgment, "like when we were level or rallying. That of course affected the result of the game in an unfair way."
"It's not the first time. We experienced the same thing in the 2006 world championships in Spain," Zhang said.
In Spain, Zhang and her partner Xie were reportedly faulted on services for a surprising eleven times in a second-round match which they survived 23-21, 22-20.
Service judgment has been a very controversial topic in badminton sport.
The service rule is that the position of the shuttle at the moment it is struck must be below the level of the lowest rib. But the rib is not seen and the position is actually left up to the judge to determine.
Lin Dan leads China to All England badminton sweep
BIRMINGHAM, England, March 9 -- Olympic champion Lin Dan led the Chinese badminton team to sweep all the five titles in All England Badminton Open on Sunday.
In a replay of the Beijing Olympic final, Lin upset current world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia 21-19, 21-12 for his fourth men's singles victory in Birmingham.
Wang Yihan, 21, stunned Danish top-seeded Tine Rasmussen 21-19,21-23, 21-11 to win her first major title in her second All England.
China also captured all the three doubles golds to become the first nation since Denmark in 1948 to win all five events at this prestigious tournament.
While they had a clean sweep in the 1987 world championships in Beijing, it is the first time for them to collect all titles overseas.
Chinese head coach Li Yongbo believed that glory came out of harder work.
"Definitely Chinese are the best in the tournament. I don't know if in every event, but they are the best this time.
"We have the best players and best coaches and they work closely together. And most of all, they train really hard. I can say no one else could work harder. That's exactly the reason why we are successful."
Chinese had booked women's doubles gold and silver before Zhang Yawen and Zhao Tingting beat Cheng Sui and Zhao Yunlei 21-13, 21-15 in an all-Chinese final, and third seeds He Hanbin and Yu Yang added mixed doubles title, fighting back from a game down to beat South Korean duo Sung Hyun and Ha Jung Eun 13-21, 21-15, 21-9.
Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng held their nerves and completed the sweep with a 21-17, 21-15 victory over Han Sang Hoon and Hwang Ji Man of South Korea.
The final between Lin and Lee, the top two players in the world, turned out to be another lop-sided one after Beijing where the Chinese sensation thumped Lee 21-12, 21-8.
Although the first game had twists and saw Lin come back superbly from 19-17 down to take the next four points, he reeled off seven points in a row from 14-12 to 21-12 to register his ninth victory over the Malaysian in their last 10 meetings.
"Even the first game, I felt it's under control although I didn' t handle the situation well at some points and became impatient. But I soon reconcentrated and won back," said Lin.
"I think today I played well and I was totally composed," he added.
Lee, apparently upset with another heavy loss to his arch-rival, admitted that Lin enjoyed the psychological advantage over him.
"Yes, I think so. But I'm ok. I hope I can try again and I'll never give up," said Lee, playing in his first All England final.
"Today we still had a good match. I had chance when leading 19-17 in the first game but I squandered a few points by easy mistakes. I don't know. I lost focus. If I could have snatched the first game, it could be a different result."
Lee also promised to try different ways to beat Lin.
"I think Lin played even a lot better than in the Olympics. He improved his speed and attacking. He's a good attacker and has good speed. Maybe I have to break his rhythm next time."
Coach Li Yongbo also responded to China's controversial absence from international events for months this year.
"Each team has its own arrangement and we did that upon players' need. They need rest. Can't you say it's a bad decision today?
"We don't think that much. It's nothing weird. But I hope other teams won't follow our example. They won't have the same result," Li said with a smile. (Xinhua)

Badminton-China goes it alone to retain dominance
BEIJING, (Reuters) - China believes it has found the solution to the dwindling number of youngsters playing badminton but its proposed professional league looks certain to put it on a collision course with world governing body, the BWF.
As the country's top players do battle at this week's All England championships in Birmingham, the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) says there are now just a thousand registered players in China and the relaunch of a national league is essential to boost those numbers.
"The league is a must, as it is the only way to commercialise and promote badminton," CBA spokeswoman Wang Yuyan told Reuters.
Inevitably, however, the proposed league would result in Chinese players shunning international events to play at home.
"You cannot burn the candle at both ends, we will have to give up some international tournaments," China's head coach Li Yongbo told state media.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF), who got an inkling of what to expect when China withdrew all its leading players from last season's first Super Series finals, said on Wednesday it wanted to talk to the CBA about the league.
"The BWF is concerned with the development but welcomes open discussion on the issue for the mutual benefit of all parties," BWF chair of events Paisan Rangsikitpho told Reuters by e-mail.
MEDAL WINNERS
China has dominated badminton since the country returned to the international sporting arena in the 1970s. Chinese players won 11 of 20 medals at the 2007 world championships and eight of 15 at last year's Beijing Olympics.
In an increasingly affluent China, however, parents restricted by law to one child no longer see sport as an attractive way for their sole offspring to get on in life.
The CBA's solution is the six to eight team league, which it says has already attracted 20 million yuan ($2.92 million) in sponsorship ahead of a projected start by the end of the year.
"This will make more and more Chinese parents let their children play badminton since they can see hope through the league," said Liu Fengyan, director of the Badminton and Table Tennis Administration.
The CBA admits clashes with the international calendar are inevitable but says they will be kept to as few as possible.
"The league is carefully working on the schedule to co-ordinate with the international tournaments as much as possible," said Wang.
"The national team's performance on the international stage must not be affected, as well as the status China has held in the badminton world," she added.
PLANNING STAGE
The league, announced with a flurry of publicity last month, is still at the planning stage, however, and the CBA is well aware that China's previous professional competition collapsed seven years ago when it ran out of money.
Liu said the league would initially be experimental, while the influential Li has suggested it would be safer to start with a smaller league and develop it step by step.
"If we run a league at a cost to the national team's interests, I'd prefer no league," said Liu.
Despite China's huge success in international badminton, the CBA are in no doubt that the country will face a crisis in the mid to long term if the present decline is not arrested.
"Chinese badminton faces a challenge," Liu said. "Many provinces have shelved their badminton teams ... at the same time there have been no new teams formed for 30 years."
The nationwide network of grassroot amateur sports schools, the base of the Chinese sports pyramid which has been producing talented youngsters for provincial and ultimately the national team for years, is also struggling to attract students.
While China's world-beating badminton squad, which boasts world and Olympic champion Lin "Super" Dan, attracts a huge amount of support, few youngsters, it seems, are playing badminton for more than fun.
Another benefit of the league, Liu believes, would be to offer financial rewards to the many top quality badminton players who fail to make it into the national team -- several of whom have defected to other countries in recent years.
"A badminton player has very little chance to succeed unless he can make it into the national team," Liu said.
"Who is going to do this if they are unable to make a living after decades of intensive training?"
The shortage of young talent has already had the sometimes acerbic Li complaining about the poor quality of new recruits to the national team.
"They have no distinguishing techniques, no will to fight and not even the vitality of youth," he said.

Badminton: Tine aims to defend badminton's All-England title
BIRIMINGHAM, England: Tine Rasmussen, who not long ago worked as a secretary to help fund her badminton, will defend her title the All-England Open which starts on Wednesday as the only woman who has loosened the Chinese dominance.
The last decade has seen 43 of the 50 All-England titles go to Asian players, fully 29 of them to China. And in women's singles eight of the last ten were won by Chinese.
But despite being past her mid-twenties before making her surge from obscurity, Rasmussen is now world number one, the winner of the first two Super Series tournaments of 2009, and a reasonable bet, in European conditions, to test the world's greatest badminton nation again this week.
The 29-year-old Dane is tall and striking, and her style strong and attacking, but her character is an intriguing mix of assertiveness and vulnerability. She also attributes her wonderful start to the year in Korea and Malaysia partly to the power of love.
"Um, I think we, er, we had some things at home, private stuff," she said with an engaging diffidence. "And it was finished.
"We were building up our house, me and my boy-friend, and we had a lot of stuff to decide on all this time. And just before Christmas we moved in," she said.
Because she is often recognised in the streets in Copenhagen, Rasmussen will wisely reveal only that their house is in Fredenborg, just north of the Danish capital. But about her emotions she was more forthcoming.
"It all gave me a feeling of being relaxed," she said.
"I also was able to let go of myself and play my best. Because when badminton becomes everything in my little world up here," she said, pointing in jest to her head.
"It gives me pressure."
"But when I feel I can have a perfect life, and a perfect family, all those things make badminton a smaller thing. That was maybe why I played my best after Christmas."
The influential boy-friend is Martin Baun, who is also the Danish team physio, and therefore around to lend support much of the time.
"He's been asking questions, maybe that I haven't been asked before, and asking some questions which hurt," Rasmussen volunteered bravely. "But they help me get better."
She also has a better understanding of why she wins against some of the Chinese players.
"Lu Lan is a very good player, and rarely loses to anyone much lower, but in a final maybe doesn't have the same confidence," Ramussen reckoned.
"She's the most stable player and I have a lot of fights with her, but the last three times I was the winner, so that's fine by me," she said, smiling.
"Zhu Lin didn't show much confidence since the Olympics, maybe because she was disappointed," Rasmussen claims.
"She can play higher than Lu Lan but she can play quite a bit lower too. But she can play like the world champion she is.
Even though Rasmussen beat Wang Chen both in Malaysia and Korea, she still emphasised the Hong Kong player's good points.
"She has fine movement, and is very clever on court as well," she says.
"But it's like she plays when she's in the mood. If she isn't, she doesn't play that well. Maybe the injuries are her biggest enemy now".
Rasmussen will also have to cope with two other Chinese, Zhou Mi and Xie Xingfang, both of whom have won the All-England title before.
"But I see them all as players I am even with," she says. "If I play my best it is difficult for them to play me with the right tactics."
How did she come to compete so well with such great players?
Among the many answers are a recovery from a long-lasting achilles injury, a new scoring system which suited her, increased confidence, and greater professionalism in diet, training, schedule, and psychology.
"I have always had a strong attack; it has always been a big part of my game. But it just had to come together, you know," she explained.
"I used to make a lot of mistakes and I was not that good at running on court, and maybe mentally I was not that strong against the best players," she admitted.
Inevitably she finds herself saddled with comparisons with her former team mate, Camilla Martin, the 2002 All-England champion, and 1999 world champion.
"I have just a few titles and she has won 15 or more," Rasmussen emphasises. "This has nothing to do with Camilla. She is one of a kind. I want to be just Tine and show that Danish women's singles is still on top."
Inevitably too, expectations have escalated. "She is our Chinese killer," Thomas Stuer Lauridsen, a Danish coaches, once memorably said, without meaning offence to the world's best badminton nation. "But she is one against many Chinese. China will always be the favourites."

Fancied pair Koo-Tan can’t afford to rest on their laurels
One of the early men’s doubles favourites Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong cannot afford to take forty winks in the All-England even in the absence of two key pairs.
A number of scratch combinations and rising young pairs will be lurking dangerously to scalp them in Birmingham.
On Monday, the organisers confirmed the withdrawal of the Olympic and world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia due to the former’s knee injury.
The Indonesian top seeds have been replaced by qualifiers Kasper Faust Henriksen-Christian John Skovgaard in the main draw.
The men’s doubles event had also lost some of its glitter earlier when South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung announced that they will not defend the title because of the latter’s obligation to serve under the country’s military programme.
In their absence, 2007 champions Kien Keat-Boon Heong and 2005 winners Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China will start as favourites.
Denmark will have two strong pairs — second seeds Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen and Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen — in the pack to challenge for the title.
The others expected to give a good account of themselves are Malaysia’s Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and England’s Anthony Clark-Nathan Robertson.
But one cannot underestimate the scratch partnerships of Yong-dae-Shin Baek-cheol and Indonesians Candra Wijaya-Joko Riyadi.
Yong-dae-Baek-cheol in winning the German Open last Sunday showed that they have the ability to spike the early favourites.
Candra-Joko are playing in their first international tournament and Indonesia can count on the experience of the former to make the pair strong challengers.
In the Malaysian Open in January, Candra teamed up with Luluk Hadiyanto for the first time and they reached the quarter-finals.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong are expected to meet Candra-Joko in the second round.
Said Kien Keat: “It will not be easy to play against a pair we have not played against before. But we are well prepared and it is our hope to do well in our third outing in the All-England.”
Indonesia will also be banking on two younger pairs — Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano and Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki-Rian Sukmawan — to ruffle some feathers.
The Koreans, in a bid to add more depth to the men’s doubles, have in the competition three other upcoming pairs — Han Sang-hoon-Hwang Ji-man, Cho Gun-woo-Ko Sung-hyun and Kwon Yi-goo-Yoo Yeon-seong.

Yong-dae and Baek-cheol among the pairs to watch in Birmingham
In Mulheim, Yong-dae-Baek-cheol, who are playing in an international tournament as a pair for the first time, claimed the men’s doubles title beating Japanese Kenichi Hayakawa-Kenta Kazuno 21-13, 21-16 in the final last Sunday.
Yong-dae is with Baek-cheol because his regular partner, Jung Jae-sung, is not available because of his obligation to serve under the national military programme. Yong-dae-Jae-sung won the All-England title last year.
With Yong-dae-Baek-cheol’s recent exploits, they are seen as the dark horses to emerge as the All-England champions.
They are in the same half of the draw as Malaysia’s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and England’s Anthony Clark-Nathan Robertson.
The absence of top seeds and Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia have further opened up the race to reach the final from this half of the draw. Yong-dae-Baek-cheol could be up against Zakry-Fairuzizuan in the semi-finals.
